#11 So…Why now?

If you have had the opportunity to read through my blog, you might have noticed some dramatic oddities in the dates. I first started my blog back in July of 2016. I was actually doing pretty good with both my blog and exercising then. I did about seven posts in just over a month! The next three didn’t come until four years later. And now here we are! Jumping back on the ol’ proverbial horse. Why now? In the middle of February? When it’s been cold and snowy out? Two reasons!

In my professional life, I’m an educator. For nearly the past year, my workspace has consisted of a fairly comfortable chair at a desk in my room. It has also provided me with easy access to nearby snacks and little motivation to be active. In the classroom I would normally be up and moving around, circulating the room, checking in with students and helping them to improve their work. Online, I can accomplish all of that with slight adjustments of my head. For a guy with a little “squishy problem” that was a recipe for…greater squishy problems. But still, I have been fairly comfortable not doing much of anything for the past 11 1/2 months. Until last Friday.

My school is going to be using a program for Social Emotional Learning (SEL) next year which requires us to go through a period of training this year. While most of it is geared towards students, there are aspects that focus on the educator. Part of this is work where we present things that we are working on in our individual lives and perhaps seeking help/support. Immediately, I thought about my weight struggles and how trying to “go it alone” has gotten me further back down the mountain path than when I initially started. I also imagined tying this work into my blog.

The second reason came today (Friday 2/26/2021 for posterity’s sake). Today we were informed that in less than a month, we would be going back into the school in a hybrid fashion. This sparked a level of concern within that I’ll compare to sudden onset of heartburn, indigestion, and nausea. I’m fairly certain that I only have one work shirt that will comfortably get all the buttons connected. My work pants barely fit so long as I don’t mind having clothing impressions embedded in my waist. But hey, no popped buttons there yet! (I need some wood to knock on…)

So now I’m motivated and I have an initial deadline. My goal is to update my blog at the minimum once a week. There will probably be times where I’ll do more. But ideally, in about 3 months time, I should have more than double the initial posts that I currently have which I’m hoping will help me build a habit that I’ll be able to maintain on this marathon of a journey.

As I was writing this post, I had been fairly set on waiting to post until later this year. Make a kind of stock of posts to publish all at once. But I decided that I might do better if I had the accountability piece of knowing I should be posting weekly. And just in case there has been someone (anyone?) waiting with bated breath for my next post.

So there you have it. I’m back and invested (even if somewhat forcibly so) in myself and in getting to a healthier and more comfortable me!
